Curtis Alden - Owner and Founder of Cutaway Products, hand crafts all orders one at a time in the order received. I strive to build the highest quality, precision, functional, and aesthetics in wooden men and wood products available. I started building dummies in 2005 while training Wing Chun Kung Fu to current day. These dummies are engineered, tested, and refined for the Ideal wooden man design. My dummies will last for lifetime and can pass down to future generations. I also design and build custom furniture, wood poles, bowls, cutting boards and many other wood items to name a few. My shop is located in Katy, Texas-West Houston area.
Dummies - The majority of the Wooden Men I produce are laminated hard wood. They are completely solid but built with layers instead a single solid core. I do a few from Solid hardwood cores which are one piece of wood- part of a tree. Laminating the dummy post yields a better quality dummy than a solid core. Solid cores will in most cases exhibit some cracks or checks which radiate from the center of the core. Cracking will sometimes even continue over years as the wood still dries etc. Laminated cores are kiln dried hard wood lumber glued together in solid layers to produce the dummy core. They maintain consistent moisture content. As with all dummies or fine wood furniture it is best to have in a controlled constant environment. Subject to outdoor, porches, and garages exposes dummies to fluctuations in temperature and humidity which is not favorable. I finish all dummies with Tung oil instead of a stain/lacquer finish. Using oil and reapplying over time allows for the continuation of absorption of oil. Applying more layers of oil and buffing will create a awesome shine/sheen.
